Explaining Andy’s 10 Percent Remark
Andy was citing Sturgeon’s Law, the notion that “90% of everything is crap,” therefore 10% of everything [“film, literature, consumer goods, etc.”] is not crap. Similar, and more mathematically based, is the Pareto Principle (or Pareto distribution, or the 80-20 Rule), which says that “roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes” (e.g., 80% of a store’s sales come from 20% of items; 20% of your wardrobe gets worn 80% of the time).
